A lot of people in the FOSS community (me included) hate Element and Matrix. The protocol, clients and servers have so many fundamental design problems and surface level papercuts that it makes the whole experience very subpar. Not to plug my own video, but I did talk about it more in detail in the video about FOSS chats I made this summer and the whole outlook (no pun intended) for Matrix doesn't look good.
